Bring out the Alleluias! (before packing them away)

Lent begins on Valentines Day in 2024. That means we have just a few short weeks to sing our alleluias with exuberance before we pack them away. During Lent, the children I am in ministry with enjoy whisper singing the chapel songs that have “alleluia” in them.

Here are three ideas for hyping up the alleluias now before packing them away on February 14:

Sing “Praise Ye the Lord/Alleluia!” using ribbon streamers. Explain to young children that Alleluia is a special, joyful church word we use to be thankful for Jesus. This year I purchased inexpensive ($9) silk ribbon streamers online which a parent embellished with the word alleluia (pictured in this post). Leaders will use these during chapel song time. If you want ribbon streamers for the whole group, you can easily make them with plastic table cloths. When Lent arrives, we will pack the ribbon streamers away and whisper sing our Alleluias.

For a simpler approach, explain what Alleluia means and point it out in your prayers and songs. Then, put a paper Alleluia in a plastic Easter egg during Lent to associate the Easter symbol with the “Alleluia.” This is the first activity in the Lent Full Circle Family Devotional I wrote.

The most active method to celebrate the Alleluias is to create an Alleluia scavenger hunt with strips of paper. Place them in a special box during Lent. On Easter morning, launch them with a parachute!
